Bircher-Benner Center for Scientific Natural Medicine.
The Grand Hotel of the Joux Valley was built between 1900 and 1901 by a team of architects and engineers from the Geneva firms Morsier and Weibel. This imposing monument, whose walls were built in a traditional manner, was constructed with natural stone taken from the existing rock just behind the property. It was one of the first buildings (of the French part of Switzerland) built with reinforced concrete plates. The lift goes up to the roof, which indicates that a seventh floor was probably planned, but never materialized.

All the 80 rooms had a hand basin with hot and cold water. The double windows and the steam-produced heating allow the Hotel to remain open through winter. There is also a small Hydrotherapy Service, its water being pumped up from the bottom of the Joux Lake.

The Grand Hotel closed down in 1955, because of the then new fashion of flying to seaside resort for holidays. From 1958 to 2002 the Hotel was made into 45 holiday flats, proposed by the “Familienhebergen” co-operative.

When the Lilli & Andres Bircher Foundation bought it, the building was in a rather old condition. It has since been renovated and has, medically and technically, everything needed for a modern medical center. The beautiful architecture of the time stands out.

The single and double rooms have been planned very carefully they all have a private bathroom with either a bath or shower. Most of them are South-oriented and offer a splendid view over the Joux Lake. All rooms, bathrooms and seminar rooms are accessible to disabled people.

Nurses in the Medical Center (who have attended special courses) take care of the patient and ensure the patient has competent care day and night. Whenever possible natural treatments replace conventional drugs. Kind and agreeable care is as important as personal assistance. It is a Medical Center where the patient feels at ease.

    Andres Bircher, Doctor of medicine and nephew of Doctor Max Bircher-Benner is the Director of the Center for a scientific natural medicine.

    The founder doctors do not express any religious or philosophical opinion. They are simply committed to respect the ethical principles defined in the Hippocratic oath for patients' welfare.

    They are Doctors of Medicine, expert in the regulatory methods of scientific natural medicine.

    The priority of the doctors at the Center is to understand with compassion, individually and methodically, the patient's personality.     Bircher Muesli: The original overnight oats recipe

    Bircher Muesli was developed around 1900 by Swiss physician Maximilian Bircher-Brenner for his patients and is still a very popular breakfast throughout Switzerland and Germany. The original recipe called for much more fresh fruit than grain and soaked the raw oats overnight since they took some time to soften. Nowadays, a soak time of 30-60 minutes seems to suffice when using quick oats, although I still prefer to prepare it the night before so that we don't have to wait for our breakfast in the mornings.

    Arik likes to not only eat the muesli for breakfast, but also in the afternoon as a snack. As far as toppings go, you can use just about anything your heart desires for fruit and nuts. We like to alternate between blueberries, strawberries, nectarines, hazelnuts, sesame seeds, and toasted coconut. And of course, no muesli is complete for Arik, without raisins, which we add the night before so that they are nice and soft.

    Keep in mind, when using rolled or old-fashioned oats, they will require a longer soak time than quick oats. I also like the texture to be quite mushy (sorry & # 8230), so this recipe uses quite a bit of liquid and yogurt. If you prefer a thicker texture just decrease the amount of milk and yogurt.

    If you and your kids like oatmeal and yogurt, you will love bircher muesli. It's the perfect summer-time breakfast, and not only really easy to make, but healthy too!

    I live near the Swiss Alps, in Bern, and I love not only melting cheese, but all kinds of Swiss cooking.

    Bircher-Benner, Maximilian

    Swiss physician and a pioneer in nutritional research. At his sanatorium in Zürich, a balanced diet of raw vegetables and fruit was used as a means to heal patients, contrary to the beliefs commonly held at the end of the 19th century.

    He is best known for the invention of the muesli cereal, although his invention differs significantly from what is today known as muesli, and in Switzerland specifically as Bircher Müesli.

    Bircher-Benner changed the eating habits of the late 19th century. Instead of much meat and white bread, he postulated eating fruit, vegetables and nuts. His ideas included not only controlled nutrition, but also spartan physical discipline. At his Zürich sanatorium off Bircher-Benner-Platz, the patients had to follow a somewhat monastic daily schedule including early bedtime (21:00), physical training and active gardening work. His theory of life was based on harmony between people and nature. Some of his ideas originated from observing the daily life of shepherds in the Swiss Alps, who lived a simple and healthy life.

    He died on 24 January 1939 at age 71 from heart desease. Two of his sons continued to run the clinic, which went into possession of the Canton of Zurich in 1973. In 1994 the clinic was closed and the valuable building sold to an insurance company.
